João Veloso

João Veloso is a multidisciplinary theatre artist from Gama, in Brazil’s Federal District. His practice moves fluidly across performance, design, and music, combining acting, clowning, puppetry, sound composition, and lighting design.

A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, Veloso developed a strong interest in collaborative creation and technical storytelling. Among his work at the school, notable credits include Stage Manager for Yerma, directed by Thomas Morgan Jones, and Sound Designer and Composer for The NeverEnding Story, directed by Jovanni Sy.

His professional work bridges performance and production. In 2025, he worked as Stage Manager and Tour Lighting Designer for Tim & Joe, and as Lighting Designer for Les Brasileirinhos. That same year, he designed lighting for the Repercussion Theatre summer tour production of The Importance of Being Earnest.

Before moving to Canada, Veloso was deeply involved in cultural initiatives in Brazil. He founded JH Produções in 2012, focusing on the development and production of cultural projects, and worked as a producer and lighting and sound technician at the Toque de Classe Musical Center where he also was General Manager for 4 years (2018-2022).

He also conceived the project CIRCOLÁ, which premiered in 2016 and toured several Brazilian cities including Gurupi, Gama, Araguari, Pirenópolis, and Guarulhos.

Internationally, he participated in the Gulangyu Brazilian Music Week in Winter in China with the group Jeitinho Brasileiro as a musician, lighting designer, and production assistant. Earlier in his career, he collaborated with the Peruvian-American company Maki Maki Theatre during their participation in the 10º FIL in Rio de Janeiro.

Upcoming collaborations include working as Assistant Technical Director at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.

His work continues to explore the intersection of performance, music, and theatrical design.
